The 2016 SAT

SAT Exam:

Looking for SAT Success? Tutor Doctor offers personalized, one-to-one tutoring right in your home. And, if you are not sure which test (ACT or SAT) is the right choice for your student, we will conduct a free in-home consultation to help you to determine the best option.

What does the SAT measure?

The SAT has been designed to mirror the strategies and skills that students have learned throughout middle school and high school. It offers students an effective assessment of college ready skills; gives teachers a clearer connection to classroom work; and provides admissions officers with a detailed picture of college readiness.

Exam Composition:

The SAT is divided into four tests: Evidence-Based Reading, Writing and Language, Math-No Calculator, and Math-Calculator. The SAT also includes an optional Analysis Essay and is now Rights Only scoring; there is no penalty for guessing on any section.

Scoring:

The four tests are scored on a 1600-point scale: 800 points for the Reading and Writing tests and 800 points for the two Math tests. Except for the essay and 12 math questions, the entire test is multiple choice.

Reading:

The five reading passages are authentic texts from previously published sources and include literary fiction, history, social science, and natural science. Graphs, charts, tables and other pictographic information are included in two of the passages.

Writing and Language:

The Writing test includes four passages with questions that ask students to correct errors in grammar and usage and to revise passages for development of ideas, sentence and paragraph organization, and effective language use. The Writing test also includes graphs, tables and other pictographic information.

Math:

The SAT Math tests focus on four specific content areas: Heart of Algebra, Problem Solving and Data Analysis, Passport to Advanced Math, and Additional Topics in Math. Each area emphasizes the foundations of mathematical analysis: problem solving, pattern and structure recognition, and modeling.

Optional Essay:

Students will also be presented with an optional essay that asks students to read and analyze an argument and discuss the author’s ability to persuade through use of rhetorical skills and evidence. Students receive three scores on their essays: one for reading and understanding the passage, one for their analysis of the author’s argument, and one for their ability to craft an effective and insightful essay.
